Edoardo “Dunkan” Medici Brings Piacenza to the Sanremo Stage

When “La Mia Parola” made its debut at the 75th Festival di Sanremo, most of the spotlight fell on the four names standing at the front: Shablo, Guè, Tormento, and Joshua. But behind the scenes, another voice from Emilia-Romagna was carrying the weight of the moment — Edoardo Medici, known artistically as Dunkan, credited as one of the authors of the song’s text.
The appearance marks an unexpected but meaningful milestone: while he wasn’t physically on the Ariston stage, a “piece of Piacenza,” as local press described it, entered the competition through Dunkan’s writing.
From New Jersey to Piacenza to the National Stage
Born in Flemington, New Jersey to a Piacentina mother and an Italian-American father, Dunkan spent his childhood moving between the U.S. and Italy before settling in Piacenza with his family. Those years — split between two cultures, two languages, and two musical identities — shaped his early connection to hip-hop and the American artists who first inspired him.
Before music became his profession, rugby was his world. He rose through local clubs in Piacenza and Parma and eventually entered the Italian Rugby Federation system. Five ACL injuries ended that chapter abruptly, forcing him into the kind of crossroads that reshapes a life.
Music became the way out — and the way forward.
Training, Craft, and Building a New Creative Hub
Dunkan went on to complete a degree in sound engineering and audio production, spending years freelancing, mixing, writing, and sharpening the technical skill set that now defines his dual identity as both artist and engineer.
Today, he is co-founder of The Spot, a Milan recording studio and creative hub he built with Edoardo Del Chiaro. The space serves as a home for artists, producers, visual creators, and writers — a modern ecosystem modeled less on traditional Italian studio culture and more on the multi-disciplinary environments seen in the U.S. and U.K.
“La Mia Parola” and the Sanremo Debut
The Sanremo entry — a collaboration between Shablo, Guè, Joshua, and Tormento — is a gritty, gospel-tinged street anthem rooted in resilience, identity, and the complexity of urban life. Dunkan contributed to the song’s lyrics, marking his first author credit on the Sanremo stage.
While the performance placed the spotlight on the four artists delivering the track onstage, the song’s writing team reflects a broader creative network. Dunkan’s contribution underscores his evolving presence not only as a performer and engineer but as a developing songwriter with national reach.
A Quiet but Significant Milestone
For Piacenza, the moment resonated as a point of pride — a local talent stepping into the country’s most-watched music event through authorship. For Dunkan, it signals the widening arc of a career built on persistence, technical mastery, and a willingness to rebuild after adversity.
Sanremo is only one step, but a meaningful one.
